The Syrian Opposition Coalition welcomes the recent report by the UN Secretary-General on the countries and armed groups that violate the rights of children in conflict areas, especially its inclusion of the Assad regime forces and its militias on the blacklist of countries and organizations that violate children’s rights.
The list of reports condemning the Assad regime has become extensive and covers various types of crimes, including war crimes, crimes against humanity, crimes of torture, mass displacement and the use of chemical weapons.
The situation in Syria requires serious international action that reflects awareness of the risks and challenges posed by the survival of the Assad regime to Syria, the region and beyond.
It is about time that the UN assume its responsibilities with regard to war crimes in Syria, and push for the referral of this issue to the International Criminal Court.
