The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) expresses deep concern over the impending crisis affecting a significant portion of Syrian civilians, particularly internally displaced persons and refugees. This comes in the wake of recent reductions in United Nations (UN) humanitarian aid and the World Food Program (WFP) announcing its intent to end its main assistance program throughout Syria in January due to insufficient funding.
The SOC urgently emphasizes the necessity of establishing a new international mechanism to address the worsening humanitarian situation faced by Syrians in both Syria and host countries. This must be done without discrimination and devoid of political exploitation, ensuring that aid reaches all deserving Syrians.
Acknowledging the efforts of donor countries, the SOC calls upon them to fulfill their obligations to the Syrian people and escalate humanitarian support. This is crucial as winter sets in, exacerbating the challenges faced by families unable to withstand the cold weather and grappling with the aftermath of the February 6 earthquake, whose effects persist among the Syrian population.
The SOC underscores that the key to alleviating the successive humanitarian crises spawned by the Assad regime lies in achieving a political transition and the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions 2254 (2015) and 2118 (2013). This approach is vital in contributing to a sustainable solution for the humanitarian crisis, meeting the aspirations of the Syrian people, and propelling Syria into a post-Assad era characterized by freedom, democracy, pluralism, and a dignified standard of living.
