The Syrian Opposition Coalition said that while the global community commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Assad regime, in collaboration with its allies, has committed a grave crime tantamount to a war crime in the city of Idlib. This ruthless act resulted in the loss of lives and injuries of at least 40 civilians who were directly targeted with rockets.
In a press release issued on Sunday, the SOC said that this atrocity starkly underscores the Assad regime’s unwavering commitment to a brutal military approach, deliberately targeting all forms of life and obstructing any semblance of security and stability in the lives of civilians.
“The ongoing transgressions of the Assad regime, constituting a severe breach of human rights and a violation of international laws and norms, demand a resolute international response. It is imperative to halt the killing machine of the Assad regime and establish a genuine deterrent compelling the regime to cease its atrocious attacks. Clear mechanisms must be instituted to hold the regime accountable for all its crimes.”
The SOC called on the UN Security Council to condemn this egregious war crime that deliberately targeted civilians. We call for immediate, effective measures to safeguard human rights in Syria, put an end to attacks on civilians, and refer Syria to international courts to ensure that perpetrators face justice.
The SOC underscored that the only viable solution to end the tragic situation in Syria is a comprehensive political transition in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254. This resolution provides an opportunity to achieve sustainable security, stability, and peace, addressing the legitimate aspirations and rights of the Syrian people.
