Israeli Attacks a Syrian Missile Shipment

Media Note Syrian Coalition Media Office Istanbul, Turkey May 4, 2013 News reports emerged yesterday of an Israeli aerial attack on Syrian territories targeting a military missile convoy on its way to Lebanon. Media sources stated that the shipment was being delivered by Hezbollah troops. We are aware that the regime’s response to this attack will be restricted to denial, or stating that they “have the right to respond,” which is Assad’s official response to Israel’s attacks. Meanwhile, Assad’s destructive machines continue to attack the Syrian people, with little or no regard for external aggression and threats. The regime has used its forces to suppress the popular demands of the people for change, weakening Syrian defense, and thus allowing external occupying forces to hit Syrian locations. Israel’s actions, including its preemptive attacks to weaken Syrian defenses, demonstrate a fear of losing the years of peace that the Assad regime provided for Israel. The Syrian Coalition deeply regrets the inaction of the international community amidst grievous violations at many levels. We demand that the Security Council, with the support of the international community, performs its duties to save Syrians from this major humanitarian crisis. We implore them to do whatever is...

Massacre in Ras Al-Nabi is an Act of Ethnic Cleansing

Media NoteSyrian Coalition Media OfficeIstanbul, TurkeyMay 4, 2013 The Syrian Coalition strongly condemns the field executions carried out by the regime forces against the civilians of Ras Al-Nabi, in the city of Banias. This massacre, which claimed the lives of 22 people, including 8 children and 4 women, occurred only two days after the Bayda massacre. The frequency of these criminal operations is raising concerns for the safety of the neighboring villages, including the village of Basateen Islam. The consistent killings in the coastal villages is a gradual attempt to ethnically cleanse these areas, similar to operations carried out by the Serbs against Bosnians two decades ago. Additionally, reports confirm that regime forces are warning residents to flee through loud speakers mounted on cars circling various villages. The neighborhoods of Banyaas are witnessing a large-scale exodus towards the city of Tartous. This is only happening after many people witnessed the sectarian massacre of their children, women and elderly. Reports state that those who attempted to flee were stopped at the entrances of Tartous; many were arrested, and others had their documents confiscated. These massacres are occurring in multi-ethnic areas, which have participated in the revolution from the beginning. This suggests that the...

The Deplorable Desecration of the Shrine of Hajr Bin Adi

Media NoteSyrian Coalition Media OfficeIstanbul, TurkeyMay 4, 2013 According to reports, an unidentified group desecrated the Shrine of Prophet Mohammad’s companion Hajr Bin Adi. The Syrian Coalition strongly condemns this act, regardless of who is found responsible. The Syrian Coalition and the Syrian people respect holy sites, places of worship, and shrines, as evidenced throughout history. We strongly condemn any abuse or desecration to any holy site, regardless of faith or sect. The Syrian Coalition has taken action to investigate this matter, and will bring those responsible to accountability and ensure that such an incident does not occur again. Extensive evidence from the past two years reveals the Assad regime’s utter disregard for the sanctity of mosques, churches, temples, and sites of cultural and religious heritage. Based on this evidence, the Syrian Coalition calls for a rejection of the sectarian discourse and practices, which the regime continues to promote. We ask that our people employ reason and tolerance, and not be drawn into these evil practices, which contradict the true spirit and values of the Syrian people. Long live Syria and its people, free and with honor.

Declaration by The Syrian Coalition on the Occasion of World Press Freedom Day, May 3, 2013.

Media StatementSyrian Coalition Media OfficeIstanbul, TurkeyMay 4, 2013 The Syrian Coalition owes a debt to all courageous journalists who risk their lives to report from troubled parts of the world. In Syria, more than 36 journalists and 58 citizen journalists have been systematically targeted and killed at the hands of Assad’s regime during the past two years. Freedom of expression in Syria has been heavily restricted in law and practice for decades. Journalists and activists have long been threatened, intimidated, arrested, abducted, and even killed in Syria. Such practices against civilians, including journalists, are completely unacceptable. These practices amount to war crimes and the perpetrators must be brought to justice. On the 20th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day, an occasion well remembered by those who seek freedom, the Syrian Coalition calls upon the Security Council to refer the situation in Syria to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court. The International Criminal Court must investigate the torture and murder of journalists in Syria, and must bring the Assad regime to justice for killing Syrian, as well as foreign journalists and reporters. The Syrian Coalition also calls on the Security Council to adopt all legally binding measures to ensure that...

The Syrian Coalition Condemns the Violence at the Syrian Turkish Border, Tel Abyad Gate

Media NoteSyrian Coalition Media OfficeIstanbul, TurkeyMay 4, 2013 One Turkish border guard was killed and at least seven were wounded, including two civilians, on Thursday, in a clash at the Akçakale border gate. This gate is opposite Syria's Tel Abyad gate. News outlets reported that the armed groups were unidentified. While security seems to be rather loose as a result of Assad’s cruel oppressive practices, suspicious groups took advantage of the situation to carry out this assault. It is clear that Assad’s regime has created chaos and is now benefitting from it. This instability brings much suffering and death not only to Syrians, but also to people of neighboring countries. The Syrian Coalition strongly condemns this assault. We also wish to remind the world that the only one who has an interest in fuelling disorder in the region is Bashar al Assad. The Syrian regime’s officials have repeatedly stated: “the conflict in Syria will burn the region.” The Syrian Coalition urges FSA fighters to exercise self-restraint, guard the border crossings, and respect the law. The Turkish government has put forth a great effort to assist Syrian refugees and facilitate hospital admissions for the wounded. We are deeply grateful for this...

The Assad Regime Massacres Civilians in Al-Bayda While the International Community Remains Idle

Media NoteSyrian Coalition Media OfficeIstanbul, TurkeyMay 3nd 2013 Reports now confirm a large-scale massacre in the city of Al-Bayda, close to the village of Banyas, in Tartous. Initial reports confirm that Assad forces were directly involved in the execution and burning of at least 150 people, including women and children. Witnesses of the crime report that Assad’s gangs used knives to murder many innocent victims. Article 2 of The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide adopted as a General Assembly Resolution 260 by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, and enforced in 1951, was ratified by Syria, and applies to this crime. Therefore, an urgent intervention by the Security Council is necessary to protect international security and peace. Additionally, the Rome Statute of International Criminal Court, which “persecutes individuals for genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression,” includes such crimes, and we urge the prosecutor of the ICC to investigate the crimes against humanity committed in Syria. Once more, the international community is faced with a test of morality and ethics. It is time for the world to intervene and put an end to the grievous crimes of the Assad regime. Assad’s...

The Collapse of the Deir el-Zour Suspension Bridge

Media NoteSyrian Coalition Media OfficeIstanbul, TurkeyMay 2nd 2013 According to today’s reports and images released from the city of Deirr el-Zour in Eastern Syria, the historic Dier el-Zour Suspension Bridge has collapsed, after Assad regime forces targeted it. Although the loss of human life is the greatest sacrifice of all, Syria’s sacrifices are certainly not limited to loss of life; monuments, mosques, churches, and now this historic bridge have been destroyed in Assad’s attempt to crush the revolution. For over 86 years, this historic bridge has connected the two Euphrates banks, but due to Assad’s disregard not only for human life, but also for our national monuments, it now lays in ruins. The Syrian Coalition strongly condemns the regime’s destructive policies, which have purposely targeted Syria’s heritage and civilization. We call on international organizations to uphold their duties and help protect what is left of Syria’s historical heritage. As we reflect on the remains of this great bridge, we reflect on our destiny to face the most brutal of tyrants and to sacrifice the blood of our sons and daughters for freedom. We are committed to rebuild our great nation. Syrians are resilient and shall overcome these tragedies. As we build ourselves back...

Statement on the Remarks made by UN Secretary General Spokesperson, Martin Nesirky’s

Media StatementSyrian Coalition Media OfficeIstanbul, TurkeyMay 2st 2013 It is most unfortunate that two years into the revolution, there are still those who await positive responses from the regime. The Assad regime’s so-called pending approval of the chemical weapons investigation team means nothing more than a lack of commitment to uncovering the truth. Today’s news reports include requirements and conditions that the Assad regime has outlined for the investigation team to fulfill in order to enter the country. This will only derail the mission and turn the investigation into nothing more than perjury of the facts.  Considering the murderous and deceitful track record of the Assad regime, the only legitimate, and impartial way an investigation can take place is through the help of the Syrian Coalition. The Syrian Coalition is capable of transporting the investigation team to the desired areas, and ensuring an impartial investigation. We urge the international community to fulfill its duties and to be stern against the Assad regime’s consistent breaking of international laws. The broken laws range from violations against freedom of speech, to the regime’s latest use of chemical weapons against civilian communities across Syria. The Syrian Coalition regrets that the investigation team must await an impossible approval...

Statement on Iran’s Remarks about the Use of Chemical Weapons in Syria

Media NoteSyrian Coalition Media OfficeIstanbul, TurkeyMay 2st 2013 Iranian officials have made accusations that “foreign parties are providing the rebels in Syria with instructions on how to use chemical weapons.” The repeated Iranian statements are hostile to the Syrian people and pose a threat to the security of the region. These statements are only said in order to conceal the real facts and to destroy any evidence against Assad’s regime. Based on completely false information, the latest Iranian statements put blame on the rebels despite reports confirming Assad’s use of chemical weapons. Iran continues to support the tyrant Assad and provide him with weapons and munitions as he tries to crush the Syrian revolution. We would like to remind the international community that it is Assad’s regime that has the ability to develop, stockpile, and use chemical weapons. Assad’s regime is fully responsible for ensuring these weapons will not be used in the future nor will be moved to any other location. There is no doubt that tyrannical governments shudder at the thought of people being free. This is the reason why they fight against the Spring which will definitely reach all capitals of tyranny in Syria when it is liberated...

The Syrian Coalition Condemns The Marjah Bombing in Damascus

Media NoteSyrian Coalition Media OfficeIstanbul, TurkeyMay 1st 2013 The Syrian Coalition offers its sincerest condolences to the families of the martyrs killed in the horrific bombing, which targeted central Damascus on the 30th of April. We are deeply saddened for the innocent victims that have fallen prey to treachery, and we wish the injured a speedy recovery. Prior to accusing anyone of committing this crime, the Syrian Coalition expresses its utmost condemnation and rejection of this type of violence. The bombing of civilian areas is unacceptable, regardless of the circumstances. However, the Syrian Coalition does hold the Assad regime responsible for this tragic incident, as it has dragged our country into this dire situation. Additionally, Damascus remains under Assad’s control, therefore the Assad regime is responsible for crimes in this region. Furthermore, such bombings have become a trademark of the regime. It is well known that they have carried out several bombings of this sort, often in attempt to draw attention away the atrocities they commit on a daily basis, using heavy artillery and chemical weapons against civilians populations. We ask for mercy for our martyrs, health for our wounded, and freedom for our prisoners. Long live Syria and its people, free and honorable.

Assad Regime Crosses Red Line Once Again: Chemical Weapons in Daraya

StatementSyrian Coalition Media OfficeIstanbul, TurkeyApril 27, 2013 The Local Council of Daraya, located in the south of Damascus, stated that the rockets that fell on the morning of April 25th carried warheads containing toxic gases. When these rockets exploded, they created a large gas cloud. The explosion led to 42 cases of choking accompanied by severe allergic reactions and severe vomiting. Those affected were taken to field hospitals and were treated with the medical assistance available. Activists documented the cases on the ground through pictures, videos, and other means. Activists also noted that animals in the area fled from the severe gases. This escalation of events confirms Assad’s determination to use chemical weapons against Syrians, as they stand firm in their quest for freedom.  Moreover, this incident demonstrates the desperation of the regime after daily failed attempts to enter the city. The regime has bombarded and attacked Darya consistently for months now, through armored vehicles, military convoys, rocket and artillery firing, aerial bombardment, and now this latest attempt through chemical warfare. The Syrian Coalition fears the regime will commit major atrocities against the city in the face of their desperation to regain control.   The Syrian Coalition denounces the use of chemical weapons and...
