A new war crime has claimed civilian lives today as rocket attacks were launched from areas controlled by Assad regime forces and PYD terrorist militia on the town of Al-Bab in Aleppo countryside. The attack targeted a mosque and densely populated areas, killing two civilians and injuring 18 others. This heinous act, which aims to destabilize liberated areas, constitutes a grave violation of international law and risks escalating military tensions, worsening civilian suffering, and triggering new waves of displacement.
The Syrian Opposition Coalition. (SOC) strongly condemns this dangerous escalation and the ongoing severe violations. These attacks highlight the Assad regime’s continued use of terrorist militias to commit crimes and its obstinate reliance on military solutions, ignoring long-standing international demands to halt attacks on civilians and engage in the UN-led political process. This escalation underscores the urgent need for the international community to activate accountability mechanisms, utilizing documented reports and evidence of thousands of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the regime.
The SOC also calls for an end to all forms of support for PKK-affiliated militias, which persist in committing grave violations against civilians, including repeated shelling, child recruitment, and oppressive policies against local populations.
The SOC emphasizes that the Assad regime’s obstruction of a political solution in Syria must be met with firm and effective international measures to advance the political process in line with UN Security Council Resolutions 2254 (2015) and 2118 (2013). Only through such measures can progress be made toward the Syria for which its people have long struggled—a state built on justice, freedom, and democracy that protects its citizens’ rights, secures their freedoms, and upholds their dignity.
