Syrian Coalition
Department of Media and Communications
March 23, 2019
The deadly attack that took place on Friday evening (March 22) in the town of Kfariya was horrific and brutal. The Syrian Coalition holds Russia full responsibility for the attack which adds to the long litany of war crimes being committed in Syria. It stresses that these crimes will eventually be referred to the International Criminal Court and that all those directly or indirectly involved will be prosecuted and held to account.
It is imperative that the international community desist from playing the role of the observer and doing nothing besides counting the victims of the ruthless airstrikes targeting civilians and residential areas.
The Friday airstrikes killed at least 15 people, including four children and two women, as well as a wounded many others. Rescuers of the White Helmets are still struggling to pull the victims from under the rubble.
We have repeatedly stated that these attacks constituted not only a breach of the agreement on Idlib and northern rural Hama, but also of the Geneva Convention. They also amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity whose perpetrators must not be allowed to escape punishment. Therefore, no party will be absolved of its responsibility for the crimes and violations against Syrian civilians, be them the parties that are carrying out the killings and violations or the parties that are keeping silent about these crimes and do nothing to prevent them.
