The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) has expressed its condemnation of the continued cooperation between the United Nations (UN) and the Assad regime, including the reception of a new representative of the regime at the UN office in Geneva.
The SOC recognizes that the Assad regime does not represent the Syrian people, but is instead a genocidal regime that has committed countless crimes against civilians through the use of weapons such as chemical weapons and barrel bombs. The SOC holds the Assad regime responsible for the ongoing human tragedy in Syria and calls for effective measures to be taken to bring about a political transition and to hold the regime and its leaders accountable for their crimes through a fair trial.
The SOC believes that providing any platform for the Assad regime and its allies only serves to further delay, deceive, and spread falsehoods. The world has seen that the Assad regime continues to obstruct any political efforts related to the Syrian conflict and is merely seeking to buy time to commit more atrocities. The SOC calls on the international community to do more to protect the Syrian people from the ongoing brutality of the regime.
