The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) mourns the passing of former Syrian Minister of Information, Mohammad Al-Zoubi, who passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2024, in his forced exile in Germany at the age of over 90. He spent 50 of those years away from his homeland after being forcibly exiled by the Assad regime in 1974.
Al-Zoubi’s stances stemmed from his patriotism and hope for a better life for Syria and its people. He opposed injustice and tyranny since the 1960s, was against the despotism of the Assad regime in the 1970s and 1980s, and supported the Syrian revolution against the Assad regime in 2011, aspiring for a free and democratic Syria. He was one of the prominent politicians in Syria and the Arab world, joining the Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party since its inception in 1947. Despite this, he strongly opposed Hafez al-Assad in the 1960s and 1970s.
Al-Zoubi hailed from the town of Mseifra, north of Daraa. He studied media at Damascus University, as well as sociology and political science. In his exile, he continued his studies at the University of Leipzig in Germany. The late politician held many important positions, including Minister of Information, former Assistant Secretary-General of the Ba’ath Party, and Assistant Regional Secretary of the party. Additionally, he was a professor of international politics at several Arab universities, including Sana’a and Baghdad.
The SOC extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and admirers of the deceased and prays for his mercy and forgiveness.
Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return.
