The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) mourns with great sadness the passing of Syrian historian and researcher Fayez Qawsra. He passed away on Thursday in the city of Idlib at the age of 79, after a long struggle with illness. Known as “the historian of Idlib,” Qawsra spent decades documenting archaeological sites in Idlib province and researching its history.
Qawsra left behind a legacy of dozens of cultural works and books, including The Traveler in Idlib Province, From Ebla to Idlib, The Arab Revolution in Northern Syria, The Revolution of Ibrahim Hananu, The Archaeological History of Arab-Islamic Monuments in Idlib Province, Qalb Luza, the Jewel of Syrian Churches, and Idlib, the Forgotten Town, among others.
His contributions created a rich cultural library that serves as a reference for antiquities and history for future generations. His works are credited with shedding light on many aspects of Idlib’s history.
The SOC extends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, his relatives, friends, and to the Syrian people for the loss of this prominent figure. We pray for his mercy and forgiveness.
We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return.
