The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) expresses profound sorrow at the passing of Syrian astronaut, Major General Muhammad Ahmed Fares, who breathed his last today in Türkiye following a prolonged illness. Born in Aleppo province in 1951, Major General Fares leaves behind an indelible legacy.
Major General Fares earned a place in the hearts of Syrians as the first Syrian astronaut to journey into space in 1987, becoming the second Arab to achieve this milestone. During his space missions, he conducted numerous scientific experiments spanning industrial, geological, chemical, and medical disciplines, as well as space monitoring and sensing.
In a courageous move, Major General Fares aligned himself with the Syrian revolution, defecting from the Assad regime in 2012. His unwavering commitment to the cause of freedom and democracy endeared him to the Syrian people, who elevated him to the status of a national icon.
The passing of Muhammad Fares represents an irreplaceable loss for the Syrian people and the Arab world. His enduring legacy and groundbreaking achievements will continue to inspire future generations.
