The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) warns of the latest measures and blockade imposed by the Assad regime forces, the Russian occupation, and their affiliated militias on Dara’a city. It stresses that real risks could result from any escalation in this direction.
The international community bears responsibility for the violations being committed by the Assad regime, Russia, and Iran. The United Nations must exert real pressure to stop threatening civilians.
The SOC reaffirms its support for the people of Dara’a province as it lauds their steadfastness and rejection of injustice and tyranny. Many sources indicated that the current escalation comes in response to Dara’a major role in exposing the recent elections farce the Assad regime has recently held in its areas.
The latest measures by the Assad regime, including tightening of measures at checkpoints, road closures, and renewed aerial activity over the province are preparations for yet a new criminal campaign and a new wave of mass displacement.
It is imperative that the international community and international actors assume their responsibilities with regard to supporting the political transition in accordance with the Geneva Communique of 2012, UN Security Council Resolutions 2118 and 2254, and UN General Assembly Resolution 67/262 which calls for the formation of a transitional governing body that includes the powers of the government and the presidency.
