The Syrian Coalition mourned the death of prominent Syrian thinker Sadiq Jalal Alazm who passed away in a hospital in Germany on Sunday. It extended its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Alazm.
Alazm, who was born in Damascus in 1934, was and one of the most important Arab philosophers and human rights advocates in modern times.
The Coalition paid tribute to the late Alazm and highly praised “his contributions to Arab thought and philosophy as well his support for the struggle of the Syrian people to regain their rights and his principled stand against oppressive authorities.”
“With the death of Alazm, Syria has lost a great thinker and philosopher who left behind a legacy that will light the way to freedom and enlightenment,” the Coalition said.
The Coalition’s Secretary-General Abdul Ilah Fahd said that “Alazm firmly sided with the Syrian revolution against the tyrannical Assad regime from the very beginning, which reflects the real, ethical role every true intellectual has to play.”
“The great Syrian Revolution has exposed the real character of many members of the so-called literary elite who chose to side with the tyrannical regime masquerading as intellectuals and thinkers. It also showed the true thinkers and intellectuals who have stood by the rightful people’s demands for freedom and dignity, of whom Sadiq Jalal Alazm was the most prominent example.”
Alazm was pronounced dead in a hospital in the German capital Berlin earlier on Monday after struggling with brain tumor. He was a founding member of the Syrian Coalition. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Office)
