The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) mourns the passing of the esteemed thinker, Professor Abdul Akram Amin Al-Saqqa, who died under torture in Assad regime prisons. He was arrested in 2011 and forcibly disappeared until his death was announced on Wednesday, August 21, 2024. His death was documented in civil records in 2014, but the Assad regime concealed this fact until now.
The late Abdul Akram Al-Saqqa was born in the town of Daraya in the Damascus suburbs in 1944. He was known for his revolutionary stances and demonstrations against the Assad regime, alongside his students, until his arrest by the regime on that account. It is worth noting that he had previously been detained for two months in 2000 by the regime’s security apparatus.
The deceased was an Islamic thinker, preacher, and Imam of the Anas bin Malik Mosque in Daraya from 1988 to 2000. He authored dozens of intellectual and jurisprudential books, among his most notable works: The Believer from Pharaoh’s Family, The Call for Change, and Visions in Thought and Heart.
The SOC extends its condolences to the family, friends, students, and admirers of the late Abdul Akram Al-Saqqa. We pray that God has mercy on him, forgives him, and grants his loved ones patience and solace.
Indeed, we belong to God, and to Him, we shall return.
