Basil Ghuneim, a member of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), has issued a warning that Assad regime forces are preparing to launch a deadly assault on the town of Muhajja in rural Daraa, following recent threats directed at the town’s residents.
In a press statement, Ghuneim highlighted the Assad regime’s threat to transform Muhajja into a “second Gaza,” citing the regime’s long history of brutality. He noted that the regime is exploiting the lack of international response to the atrocities committed in Syria and the broader region, continuing its actions without facing accountability.
Ghuneim called for a decisive international stance against these ongoing threats to civilians and urged the global community to work towards holding the perpetrators accountable. He emphasized that ensuring stability across all Syrian regions requires adherence to international agreements, specifically the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Resolutions 2118 and 2254, as a pathway toward a political solution.
Local activists in Daraa reported that during a meeting with town dignitaries, the Assad regime issued an ultimatum, threatening to storm Muhajja unless members of local groups surrender themselves and their weapons.
The residents of Muhajja have rejected these demands, arguing that surrendering would endanger their lives and enable the regime to tighten its security grip on the town, potentially leading to broader control over the entire Daraa province.
