The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) welcomes the decision made by Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, to impose sanctions on war criminal Bashar al-Assad and other figures of his regime. Zelensky emphasized the need to hold Russia accountable for its crimes committed in both Syria and Ukraine.
The SOC has stated that the Assad regime and its allies respond brutally to the aspirations of the Syrian and Ukrainian peoples, as evidenced by their actions. After destroying Syria and displacing its people, the Assad and Putin regimes are repeating their crimes in Ukraine, taking advantage of the international community’s failure to hold them accountable for their violations.
The SOC stresses the importance of the Western world’s punitive measures to include Russia, Iran, and the Assad regime. The crimes committed by these entities in both Syria and Ukraine stem from a criminal approach, which they all share. They also provide political support for each other in international forums, taking advantage of the platforms that international organizations still give them.
The SOC commends the Ukrainian President’s linking of Ukraine and Syria in the face of the common Russian enemy and its henchmen, such as the Assad regime and the occupier’s agents in the four occupied Ukrainian regions. The SOC reaffirms that the Syrian people stand with their Ukrainian counterparts in their heroic defense of their country against the Russian barbaric invasion until the liberation of the country and the expulsion of the aggressors.
