Assad’s policy of “starvation until submission” continues to enfeeble civilians in Syria, in stark contravention of international humanitarian law and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2139, which demands the immediate lifting of sieges of populated areas and the access of humanitarian assistance.
Assad’s forces tightened the siege on Babila, southern Damascus, early morning, after the blockade was temporarily lifted yesterday for the first time in nearly 7 months. The short-lived relief followed a truce, agreed earlier to end the siege permanently on the area and allow aid in.
The regime’s backtrack on what had been agreed to is another proof the regime is not a credible partner and is intent on shirking its international obligations in relation to allowing access of humanitarian aid to civilians in need.
