Hundreds of civilians on Friday took to the streets of different parts of Idlib province to denounce Russia’s use of its veto power on the UN Security Council to block a draft resolution calling for an end to the bombardment.
Local activists said that dozens of people gathered in the town of Kafar Takharim in northern rural as they condemned the Russian-Chinese veto. The demonstrators reiterated calls for the fall of the regime and the withdrawal of the Russian and Iranian occupiers from Syria.
More than 200 people also gathered in the Clocktower Square in central Idlib city. They waved the flag of the Syrian Revolution and held signs that read ‘stop the killing of children’ and ‘the veto is killing us’ and ‘a court where the criminal is heard and the victim’s defense is absent is not fair.’
Dozens of people also demonstrated in Ma’aret al-Nu’man, south of Idlib, to condemn the Russian-Chinese veto. They also chanted slogans denouncing HTS militant group as they called on the international community to protect civilians and vital civilian centers from the Assad regime and Russian attacks.
The demonstrations came in response to Russia and China’s vetoing of a draft UN Security Council calling for a truce in Idlib. This is the 13th time Russia used the veto to shield the Assad regime to block any resolution that might lead to accountability in Syria.
The Syrian National Coalition earlier said that the the blocking of the draft resolution that was proposed by Belgium, Kuwait and Germany represented a continuation of the Russian cover-up of the Assad regime’s war crimes and crimes against humanity.
