SOC: Int’l Efforts to Resolve Refugee Crisis Did Not Live Up to Required Level

The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) said that the various international efforts to confront the refugee crisis did not rise to the required level, neither in terms of facing the disaster itself, putting an end to it, and holding those responsible to account, nor in terms of dealing with its direct results and providing assistance to the refugees, the internally displaced persons, and the affected.

In a press release issued on Saturday marking the World Refugee Day, the SOC said that the refugee disaster caused by the Assad regime in Syria is about to enter its tenth year after it turned into an absolute tragedy in which the Syrian people are going through conditions almost unprecedented in our modern era right under the eyes of the world.

The SOC renewed its warning about the risks of the continued catastrophe affecting Syrian refugees, as well as of its possible consequences in the medium and long terms. It also stressed the need to respect international laws and conventions on the protection of refugees and preventing violations against them.

“We can only thank the friendly and sisterly countries that are hosting the Syrian refugees and those which provided them with assistance.”

The SOC added: “It is imperative that the international community assume its responsibilities towards the Syrian refugees and take action against whoever committed crimes against them. Action is also needed to impose a real political solution based on international resolutions, chief among them is UN Security Council resolution 2254 to ensure that the aspirations of the Syrians are met as well as allow a dignified and safe return of all Syrian refugees to their homeland so that they contribute to its rebuilding and prosperity.” (Source: SOC’s Media Department)

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
