SOC Denounces UN OCHA Office’s Remarks on Syrian Students

The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) slammed the statement made by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs on the crossing of Syrian students to regime-held areas to sit their exams.

The SOC stressed the “language and tone of the statement seemed biased and unbalanced and generally represented a shock to Syrian pundits and specialists.”

“The statement implies that the UN agency have turned into a mouthpiece and propaganda tool for the regime and a tool that the murderous regime is using in its war against the Syrian people.”

The SOC added: “In any of its paragraphs, the statement did not show any respect for the lives of hundreds of thousands of Syrians who were killed. It did not show any sympathy with the suffering of the millions who have been subjected to the regime’s atrocious crimes for the past several years and who have lost their past and their present, and who are about to lose their future.”

“The regime destroyed more than 500 schools, displaced thousands of teachers and hundreds of thousands of students, detained tens of thousands, and killed thousands more under torture.”

The SOC went on to say that “the language of the statement, which was issued by an esteemed UN agency, risks creating a false image of a regime made up of a mixture of a mafia and terrorist organizations living off on the misery of the Syrian people. These remarks present the regime as a state and government that is keen on upholding human rights. The OCHA risks acting as a major player in the rehabilitation of the most dangerous criminal in our modern era.”

“Multiple reports and investigations have already confirmed time and again that the Assad regime is seeking to exploit international organizations by all possible means. It is using humanitarian aid it steals from the UN to support its Shabbiha and army. The UN OCHA has fallen into the trap of the criminal and seems unable to take a balanced position on a very clear issue.”

The SOC demanded that the UN OCHA office should apologize from the Syrian people and the lives of thousands of students who were killed as a result of aerial bombardment targeting their schools, institutes, universities and their homes at a time when OCHA was expressing its concern about what is happening. Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
