The Syrian Coalition’s political committee met with representatives of rebel groups earlier today to discuss the latest field and military developments. The meeting also discussed the latest political developments with regard to the negotiation process. Both sides agreed to enhance coordination to confront enemies of the Syrian Revolution.
The two sides issued a joint statement reiterating support for a political process in accordance with the principles of the Syrian Revolution. They stressed the need to fully enforce articles 12 and 13 of UN Security Council resolution 2254 (2015) relating to humanitarian aid and cessation of attacks against civilians. These provisions were also previously highlighted by UN Security Council resolutions 2118 (2013), 2139 and 2165 (2014).
The statement underscored that provisions enshrined in articles 12 and 13 are a humanitarian right without which the negotiating process cannot be launched.
The statement stressed the responsibility of the United Nations the international community for the continuation of siege, starvation, and bombing of civilians. The United Nations and the wider international community have so far failed to force the Assad regime to implement any UNSC resolutions on Syria including the above-mentioned resolutions.
Moreover, the statement categorically rejected Russia’s continued aggression on Syria as well as its dictates on the Syrian opposition with regard to the political and negotiating process. It described Russia’s acts as blatant interference in the affairs of the Syrian opposition and sheer political blackmail.
The statement held the Assad regime and its Russian ally responsible for any failure regarding the political process as they continue to commit war crimes; kill and starve civilians; destroy Syria’s infrastructure including hospitals and schools; and refuse to implement UN Security Council resolutions.
