The fifth round of talks by the drafting committee of the Constitutional Committee began at the UN Geneva Office on Monday amidst strict precautions against the coronavirus.
The agenda of the current round of talks focuses on discussing the basic principles of the constitution in accordance with the Constitutional Committee’s mandate, terms of reference, and basic elements of its bylaws.
Representatives of the Syrian Negotiations Commission in the drafting committee on Sunday held their first preparatory meeting in which they focused on reviewing their plan of action for the fifth round of talks.
Co-chair of the Constitutional Committee, Hadi Al-Bahra, and members of the Syrian Negotiations Commission met with the UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, as part of preparations for the fifth round of talks.
Al-Bahra stressed the need to speed up the constitutional reform process as a gateway to drafting a new constitution for Syria. He stressed that putting an end to the suffering of the Syrian people – including most importantly the release of detainees, disclosing the fate of the forcibly disappeared, the safe, dignified and voluntary return of the IDPs and refugees, meeting the aspirations of the Syrian people for freedom, dignity, justice, democracy, and building state of equal citizenship – can only be achieved through reaching a just political solution through the full implementation of UN resolutions 2118 and 2254.
Al-Bahra reaffirmed that representatives of the Syrian Negotiations Commission stand ready to seriously engage and deal positively with every possible effort in order to fulfill the mission entrusted to the Constitutional Committee in accordance with its mandate so as to contribute to the political process and the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
