The National Commission for the Affairs of Detainees and Missing Persons, in cooperation with the Association of Survivors from Assad’s Prisons, organized a photo exhibition to showcase the horrors taking place in the prisons of the Assad regime. The exhibit was hosted by the Free Aleppo University in the town of Azaz in rural Aleppo.
The photos were smuggled out of Assad’s prisons and show dozens of emaciated bodies carrying signs of brutal torture, a widespread practice that the Assad regime’s security services use against detainees.
The launch of the exhibition was attended by President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) Nasr Al-Hariri, legal experts, rights activists, academics, students and citizens.
Head of the Commission, Yasser Al-Farhan, and female ex-detainees highlighted the stories of the victims who appeared in the pictures, recounting the brutal methods of torture they were subjected to. They stressed the need to keep the issue of detainees as a top priority.
Al-Hariri delivered a speech emphasizing the importance of the issue of detainees, making it clear that this issue is one of the SOC’s top priorities as it raises it in every meeting and occasion. He said: “We will spare no effort to seek the release of detainees and the disclosure of the fate of the missing.”
Al-Hariri stressed that the Assad regime’s crimes are affecting all components and segments of the Syrian society without exception, including athletes, artists, and actors. He pointed out that the Assad regime’s security services continue to carry out crimes, arbitrary arrests, and torture in prisons and detention centers.
He stressed the need for the issue of detainees to remain alive in conscience of every Syrian and to be highlighted in every demonstration, meeting and event until all detainees are freed from the prisons of the murderous Assad regime and the terrorist, separatist militias.
