SOC’s President Discusses Syria Developments with Revolution Activists

April 17, 2021
in Coalition News

President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) Nasr Al-Hariri held a virtual meeting with activists representing the revolutionary movement in the liberated areas and discussed with them the latest on the ground and political developments.

Al-Hariri gave an overview on the activities that the SOC and its executive institutions are carrying out in the liberated areas. He also talked about the results of their follow-up to projects and institutions providing basic services to citizens.

Commenting on the Turkish-Russian-Qatari proposal, al-Hariri said that although the tripartite meeting did not produce results, it could be the beginning of other steps towards revitalizing the political process and addressing humanitarian needs.

Moreover, he stressed that the Assad regime still insists on pursuing a military solution while the United Nations is yet to fully assume its role. He said that the UN envoy, Geir Pedersen, failed to hold a sixth session of the Constitutional Committee.

Al-Hariri said that everyone is dissatisfied with the stalled constitutional process, especially in light of the Assad regime’s insistence on holding farcical elections in the months to come. He called on the United Nations to adopt new mechanisms for the Constitutional Committee by setting a clear timeframe for the process and beginning to discuss the constitutional provisions. He stressed that the UN envoy should assume his full role as a UN envoy rather than a letter carrier as well as openly identify the party that is obstructing the process rather than hinting to it.

Furthermore, al-Hariri stressed that a solution in Syria can only be reached through the implementation of UN resolutions, most notably the Geneva Communique of 2021 and UN Resolution 2254, the formation of a transitional governing body with full executive powers, the launch of a genuine national dialogue, and holding democratic elections under the supervision of the United Nations.

He also said that the SOC is studying all options at hand and the impact of each option on the aspirations of the Syrian people for freedom, dignity and democracy.

For their part, the activists stressed that the Assad regime is wasting time and refusing to engage into the political process with the hope of achieving a military victory. They demanded a transition to the declaration of constitutional principles as they stressed commitment to the unity of Syria.

The activists put forward proposals for the work of the Constitutional Committee while some questioned the feasibility of participating in the process in view of the Assad regime’s obstructionism. (Source: SOC’s Media Department)

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
