The joint delegation of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) and Syrian Negotiations Commission (SNC) to the United States met the German mission to the United Nations on the sidelines of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly. The two sides discussed the latest developments on the ground and in the political process in Syria.
The meeting brought together SOC’s President Salem Al-Meslet, SNC’s President Anas Abdah, Vice-president Ruba Habboush, SNC’s member Ibrahim Berro, and Director-General for Africa, Latin America, the Near and Middle East at the German mission Philipp Ackermann.
The joint delegation talked about the latest developments on the ground and in the humanitarian situation in Syria, and the violations being committed by the Assad regime and its backers and the PYD militia against the Syrian people. They stressed that the SOC is seeking to create a civilized model for administration in the liberated areas through its interim government and the rest of institutions.
The joint delegation expressed its regret at the failure of the political process, especially with regard to the Constitutional Committee, stressing the need to reach a political transition in accordance with the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Resolutions 2118 and 2254.
The delegation also spoke about the issue of humanitarian aid and the extension of the UN resolution on the cross-border delivery of aid to Syria. They thanked Germany for its important role in extending the resolution as well as its efforts to hold war criminals accountable.
The delegation stressed that despite the importance of the humanitarian aid, it alone cannot solve the Syrian crisis, and that political solution remains the only solution that can end all the crises affecting the Syrian people.
The delegation reiterated the need to prevent normalization with the Assad regime and not to allow humanitarian aid to be used as a pretext for this normalization. They also stressed the need to maintain the sanctions imposed on the Assad regime as easing them would increase its intransigence.
For his part, Mr. Ackermann spoke about his country’s policy in Syria, pointing out that Germany is communicating with the UN envoy in order to find out about the latest developments in the political process.
He expressed his concern over attempts to rehabilitate the Assad regime despite the various war crimes it is committing against civilians, stressing that his country’s position will not change towards supporting the rights of the Syrian people.
