in Coalition News

President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Salem Al-Meslet, gave a briefing and a report on the presidency’s work to the General Assembly during its 59th regular session. He gave an overview on the activities and results of the local and international meetings he held during the past two months.

Al-Meslet highlighted the importance of the visits that the SOC has recently made to the liberated areas, the meetings it held with various revolutionary activists, commanders of the Syrian National Army and the free police force, and managers of the administrative and service institutions.

Al-Meslet stressed that the SOC is keen on stepping up its activities in the liberated areas, enhancing its presence in the local civil, military and political bodies, and developing the effective presence of the executive institutions at the level of the Syrian Interim Government, the Assistance Coordination Unit, and the Recovery Trust Fund.

Moreover, Al-Meslet talked about the international and diplomatic meetings that the SOC held with foreign ambassadors and missions to the United Nations, as well as officials in the US administration in Washington. He stressed the need to continue the work to revitalize the political process and achieve the Syrian people’s demands for freedom, dignity and democracy.

He also stressed that the SOC is keen on activating international communication and interaction with the major actors in Syria. He pointed out that the SOC is currently working to propose creative solutions based on serious initiatives and creative ideas with the aim of revitalizing the political process and finding an appropriate solution in Syria. He said: “It is necessary to take the initiative in the new paths that suit our people and take into account their sacrifices and aspirations for freedom and dignity.”

Al-Meslet stressed that the SOC has always supported negotiations, and still stresses the importance of participating in all international efforts, namely those of the United Nations, the UN Security Council and the Geneva negotiations to bring about a political transition in line with UN Resolution 2254. He also stressed that the SOC is keen on taking advantage of every opportunity to reach a solution that satisfies the Syrian people and fulfills their hopes and aspirations.

He also stressed the continuation of work to ensure the release of detainees and the disclosure of the fate of the missing and forcibly disappeared. He also said that the SOC continues to document human rights violations and the crimes that the Assad regime is committing against the Syrian people.

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
