SOC’s Political Committee to Hold Extensive Meetings in Freed Territories to Discuss Latest Syria Developments

December 24, 2021
in Coalition News

The Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) political committee held its periodic meeting to discuss the latest field and political developments in Syria. The meeting was chaired by SOC’s President Salem Al-Meslet.

Secretary of the committee, Abdul Majeed Barakat, began the meeting with a review of the agenda of the meeting and the outcomes of the previous meeting. He also gave the weekly overview on the political developments related to Syria.

Al-Meslet spoke about the phone call he made with the permanent representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdullah Al-Mouallimi. Al-Meslet expressed his appreciation of the positions of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and the Kingdom in support of the Syrian Revolution, which was embodied in Al-Mouallimi’s recent speech before the UN Security Council.

Al-Meslet pointed to the importance of continuing to hold regular meetings with the active political, military and social personalities in the liberated areas. These meetings would serve as a prelude to extensive meetings with representatives of the popular, civil and revolutionary bodies across the liberated areas. He pointed out that work is currently underway to form a preparatory committee to prepare for these meetings.

Al-Meslet stressed the need to co-opt personalities representing civil society organizations and unions operating in the liberated areas as crucial for promoting the SOC’s strategy and vision as well as enhancing its representation of the various segments of society.

Member of the political committee, Abdelbaset Abdullatif, gave an overview on the work of the committee tasked with amending the SOC’s statute, stressing the committee’s keenness on submitting a real reform proposal and not just a formal amendment.

Coordinator of the SOC’s Office of Syrian Communities Abroad, Muhammad Yahya Maktabi, spoke about the importance of strengthening the role of the communities and communicating with them. He also talked about the latest developments in the SOC’s efforts to prepare for the holding of a general conference of the Syrian Communities around the world.

Member of the political committee, Hadi Al-Bahra, gave an overview on the activities of the Syria Recovery Trust Fund and the efforts being made to persuade the countries contributing to the Fund to support projects in the liberated areas, especially in the areas west of the Euphrates.

Member of the political committee, Ahmed Tomeh, spoke about the course of the Astana 17 meeting and the issues that were discussed, especially the issue of detainees and missing persons. He said that the Assad regime insists on procrastination in disclosing the fate of the missing and releasing the detainees.

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
