The Syrian Women’s Authority, in cooperation with the Stabilization Support Unit, continues the series of activities and training courses on strengthening the role of women and their political empowerment. The Authority organized a colloquium under the title “the seventh session of the Constitutional Committee: the prospects and outcomes” in the city of Gaziantep.
The Authority hosted member of the drafting committee and representative of the delegation of the Syrian Negotiations Commission, Tariq Al-Kurdi, and a number of women who are active in public affairs.
Al-Kurdi gave an overview on the work of the seventh session of the Constitutional Committee, its details and outcomes. He pointed out that the constitutional process is part of the Geneva process, stressing that Syria needs a new constitution that comprises all the values and principles that the Syrian revolution proclaimed.
Participants discussed prospects of the work of the Constitutional Committee as well as the fate of the rest of the baskets and political tracks. They stressed the need to promote women’s rights and freedom in Syria and to guarantee these rights in the constitution in order to ensure women’s participation in the political, social and cultural activities.
Participants also stressed the need for the Syrian Negotiations Commission to insist on opening the rest of the baskets laid out in UN resolution 2254 and on the provisions that must not be subject to negotiations, most notably the issues of detainees. They also stressed to need to press for the disclosure of the fate of the detainees and for the new constitution to include independent public bodies that would be tasked with addressing the issues of detainees, missing persons, and transitional justice.
