SOC’s Political Committee Chooses Badr Jamous as Candidate to Head Syrian Negotiations Commission

The Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) political committee held a regular meeting in the presence of President Salem al-Meslet, President of the Syrian Negotiations Commission Anas Abdah, and Co-chair of the Constitutional Committee Hadi al-Bahra.

The SOC’s political committee decided to adopt Badr Jamous as the SOC’s candidate to head the Syrian Negotiations Commission.

Abdah gave an overview on the latest meeting with the UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, in Istanbul, in preparation for the eighth session of the Constitutional Committee.

Abdah made it clear that he explained to the UN envoy the background of the so-called amnesty that the Assad regime has recently issued for detainees. He said that this move aims to deceive the Arab countries and the international community into accepting the normalization of relations with the regime, as the so-called amnesty covered only a few hundred out of hundreds of thousands of detainees still in the regime’s custody.

During his meeting with the UN envoy, Abdah also stressed the demands of the Syrian Negotiations Commission, which it submitted to the UN Security Council regarding referring Al-Tadamon Massacre to the UN mechanisms for investigation and accountability, setting a timetable for completing the work of the Constitutional Committee, and discussing all provisions of UN Resolution 2254.

Abdah added that a solution in Syria must be based on achieving a political transition in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions, and it cannot be reduced to s0-called amnesty decrees and humanitarian aid.

Meanwhile, al-Bahra gave an overview on the ongoing preparations for the eighth session of the Constitutional Committee and the preparations by the delegation of the Commission in terms of preparing papers and discussion topics.

Member of the SOC’s political committee Ahmed Tomeh gave an overview on the upcoming Astana meeting due to be held in the Kazakh capital, Nur-Sultan in mid-June. He also talked about the desired results from this meeting in terms of stopping violations and maintaining the ceasefire, especially in light of the latest international and regional developments.

Participants reviewed the reports submitted by the SOC’s committees, offices and departments. Member of the political committee, Yahya Maktabi, presented an analytical political paper on the accelerating political developments in the region and the world as well as their possible impact on Syria.

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
