SOC’s Communities Office Organizes Virtual Meeting between Opposition Chief Negotiator and Heads of Syrian Community in US

With coordination by the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) Office of the Syrian Communities Abroad, Head of the Syrian Negotiations Commission Badr Jamous held a virtual meeting with the heads of the Syrian community in the United States to discuss the latest developments in Syria and lay out the Commission’s vision and action plan in the next stage.

The meeting brought together Coordinator of the Office, Muhammad Yahya Maktabi, the SOC’s representative in New York Maryam Jalabi, and the SOC’s representative in Washington Qutaiba Idilbi.

It also brought together members of the Syrian community in the US Haitham Al-Bazm, Tariq Abu Ghazaleh, Mirna Barq, Zaki Lababidi, Maysa Qabbani, Mahmoud Harmoush, Muhammad Al-Fattal, Muhammad Bakr Ghubeis and Wael Al-Sawah.

Jamous spoke about the current international and regional conditions that have turned the Syrian issue into a humanitarian one that is being negotiated in the Security Council and subject to Russian blackmail.

Jamous pointed out that Assad regime’s senior officials appointed their children and relatives as employees at the UN organizations operating in the areas under its control with the aim of stealing aid and denying it to those who deserve it.

Moreover, Jamous outlined the vision and action plan of the Syrian Negotiations Commission for the months to come, stressing the importance of restoring the Syrian role in the political and negotiating process. He pointed out that this could not be achieved unless there was a popular support for the Commission in the decision making.

He called for rearranging the ranks of the Commission following the new positive regional atmosphere, especially the Turkish-Arab rapprochement. He stressed the importance of restoring the Arab role in Syria and rearranging relations with Arab states, especially Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, UAE and Jordan, in addition to strengthening the relations with Turkey. He also pointed to the need to maintain pressure on active states to implement UN Resolution 2254.

Furthermore, Jamous praised the role of the Syrian communities in the diaspora, especially in the United States, stressing the importance of investing in this role to urge the US administration to help achieve the Syrian people’s demands for freedom, dignity and democracy.

Jamous also spoke about the importance of former leaders in the institutions of the Syrian revolution and the opposition, stressing the Commission’s keenness to attend all international forums and meetings related to Syria. He described as unacceptable the absence of a Syrian role in the meetings related to Syria.

He also called for cooperation between the institutions of the Syrian revolution and the Syrian communities in the diaspora, the armed opposition, and political forces in all regions, including in the liberated areas, stressing that it is the only way to achieve the goals of the Syrian people.

For his part, Maktabi pointed out that the Syrian revolution relies on the steadfast revolutionaries in the liberated areas and the Syrian communities around the world, stressing the need for the integration of these two wings in order for the revolution to achieve its goals.

Maktabi also stressed the need to take advantage of the new regional developments and the atmosphere of regional reconciliation, which he considered would reflect positively on the Syrian file.

On the extension of the UN authorization for the cross-border delivery of  humanitarian aid to Syria, Maktabai stressed that Russia seeks to enable the Assad regime to control international aid by sending this aid through the areas under the control of its forces. He said that the regime will thus steal aid and give it to its militias and forces to support them in the killing and displacing of the Syrian people. (Source: SOC’s Media Department)

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
