Haytham Rahmeh, Secretary-General of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), has commended the State of Qatar for maintaining its principled position on the Syrian conflict, despite some countries rushing to normalize relations with the Assad regime.
In a statement, Rahmeh emphasized the importance of holding the regime accountable for its crimes against the Syrian people and the region, and rejecting any attempts to legitimize it.
Rahmeh also lauded Qatar’s recent affirmation that a sustainable solution to the conflict must be based on UN resolutions, particularly Security Council Resolution 2254, which calls for accountability for violators of international law.
Qatar’s Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations, Jassim Sayar Al-Maawda, echoed this sentiment in a recent speech, emphasizing the importance of justice and accountability to end impunity for violators of international law in Syria.
Al-Maawda reiterated Qatar’s commitment to supporting the International, Impartial, and Independent Mechanism and stated that the appropriate way to achieve a sustainable solution in Syria lies in the international consensus contained in the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
