Salwa Aksoy, a member of the political committee of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) and coordinator of the National Commission for the Affairs of Detainees and Missing Persons, has called for urgent action to prevent the transfer of detainees and convicts in Roumieh Prison to the Assad regime.
Aksoy warned that the Lebanese government’s decision to do so violates international laws and norms, and could result in the execution of prisoners who escaped the oppression of the Assad regime.
Aksoy condemned the systematic torture of detainees in Roumieh Prison and called on the Lebanese government to take full responsibility for any harm that may come to the prisoners after they are handed over to the Assad regime. The SOC has already informed relevant international organizations of the abuses taking place in the prison.
Meanwhile, the detainees themselves have appealed to the world not to allow the Lebanese authorities to hand them over to the criminal Assad regime. More than 400 Syrian detainees, many of them supporters of the Syrian Revolution and defectors from the Assad regime’s army, are currently held in Roumieh Prison. They fear that their transfer to the regime would result in their execution.
