Al-Asimi Affirms Geneva Process and UN Resolution Implementation as Key to Syria's Ideal Solution

Ayman Al-Asimi, a member of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), commended Qatar and Germany for their steadfastness in their positions regarding the normalization efforts of some countries with the Assad regime and their commitment to pursuing a just solution in Syria. Al-Asimi emphasized that the Geneva process and the implementation of UN resolutions remain the ideal path for resolving the Syrian conflict.

Al-Asimi expressed hope that the continued support of the United States, Qatar, and European countries would impede the acceleration of normalization processes and the restoration of relations between certain regional countries and the Assad regime. He noted that these positions would exert pressure on the Assad regime and its supporters.

During a press conference in Doha on Wednesday, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani, and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock reiterated their stance that “the restoration of stability in Syria must address the aspirations of the Syrian people.”

Al-Thani emphasized the necessity of finding a just and comprehensive solution in Syria, while Baerbock expressed Germany’s concerns about recent normalization steps taken by some countries towards the Assad regime. She stated that the international community must not forget the brutality of Bashar al-Assad, emphasizing the Syrian people’s right to live in safety and stability and stressing the need for a political process in Syria.

The SOC previously highlighted that normalization with the Assad regime would not serve the interests of the Syrian people or support their demands. It would also fail to serve the interests of brotherly nations, and instead, it would encourage the Assad regime to destabilize friendly countries.

The SOC called on all countries to isolate the criminal regime, support the Syrian people, and work towards the implementation of UN resolutions, particularly resolutions 2254 and 2118. It emphasized the need for a genuine commitment to achieving a political transition, urging against wasting time by granting opportunities to the Assad regime, which evades accountability and seeks to consolidate power.

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
