SOC’s President Convenes Urgent Political Committee Meeting to Address Southern Syria and Coastal Situation

President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Salem Al-Meslet, convened an emergency meeting of the political committee on Tuesday to deliberate on actions to bolster the peaceful civil anti-regime movement in Daraa, Suwayda, and coastal areas.

The committee extended its salute to demonstrators nationwide who once again confront the military apparatus deployed by the Assad regime to quell protests and stifle civilian freedom of expression. The attendees emphasized that the Assad regime is steering the country into peril due to its persistence in committing crimes and perpetuating policies that hinder the restoration of security, stability, and normalcy. Moreover, it stands accused of pilfering citizens’ funds and siphoning state institutions through Iran-backed militias and cronies.

The attendees also applauded the patriotic figures lending their support to anti-regime demonstrations and the strike. Special acknowledgment was reserved for Hikmat al-Hijri, the leader of the Druze community, who voiced solidarity with ongoing protests, asserting that “the country and its resources belong to the people, and no one has the right to sell, mortgage, or lease these assets.”

In a speech on Monday, Al-Meslet underscored that the corruption, deteriorating living conditions, and sustained public protests in the regime-controlled areas constitute evidence that the Assad regime cannot serve as a solution for Syria. He unequivocally labeled it the prime catalyst for past and current crises afflicting the nation.

Al-Meslet asserted that civilians entrapped in Assad regime-controlled territories are fellow citizens, and the SOC unequivocally backs them, offering support for their protests and uprisings against the regime. He affirmed that the envisioned Syria is not exclusive to any particular group but for all citizens aspiring to dignified lives.

The SOC’s support for the renewed uprising in southern Syria against the Assad regime was emphasized by Al-Meslet. He praised the populace’s bravery and resoluteness in their quest for decent lives.

Al-Meslet stressed that the world must recognize the Syrian populace’s rejection of the regime’s rule, which has instigated a campaign of death, terror, and devastation. He underscored that the regime’s attempts to fragment Syria’s social fabric will not succeed.

The voices of the people in Suwayda, who have rallied behind the Syrian north, symbolize national unity and shared aspirations. Al-Meslet underscored the importance of the world heeding the authentic voices emerging from Damascus, Suwayda, Daraa, Aleppo, the Syrian coast, and other provinces. These are the voices that repudiate injustice and embrace life, voices that challenge the Assad regime’s dominion, constructed on the corpses of innocent Syrians.

Al-Meslet emphasized that the Syrian people, in their pursuit of freedom, consider the Assad regime as having already fallen, a conviction that they firmly hold. They are resolute that this regime will not triumph, and Syria cannot revert to the status quo before 2011.

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
