3,500 Families Flee Eastern & Southern Rural Idlib to Jabal al-Zawia

January 13, 2018
in Local News

Head of the relief office in the local council in Jabal al-Zawia, Fayyad al-Yaqub, said that the no fewer than 3,500 families have recently arrived in the villages of the area coming from southern and eastern rural Idlib. He pointed out that more families are arriving to flee the heavy bombardment by the Assad regime and its allies.

Yaqub told Smart News Network that the new arrivals now live in around 33 villages in Jabal al-Zawia. Some households live in the villages of Jabal Al-Zawia or in nearby farms, while the majority of the new arrivals live in makeshift camps they set up in the area.

Yaqub said that the camps were hastily pitched and lack basic necessities such as sewage networks, electricity and bathrooms.

The local council is developing a project to set up camps to house the displaced people who are randomly dispersed in the area, Yaqub added. He pointed out that some relief organizations distributed food baskets and blankets in two camps in the area.

Idlib province has been coming under a brutal onslaught by regime forces backed by Russian air force. The ongoing bombing campaign on Idlib province has left hundreds of civilian casualties and caused massive destruction to vital civilian centers as well as forced over 80,000 people out of their homes.

The Syrian Coalition said that Minister of Health in the Syrian Interim Government Mohammed Firas al-Jundi was injured and his driver, Hussam al-Mandil, was killed in airstrikes on the town of Ma’arat al-Nu’man in rural Idlib on Thursday.

The Syrian Coalition earlier said that Russia and Iran are not committed to international resolutions on Syria, adding that they are partners in all the crimes the Assad regime is committing against Syrian civilians.

The Coalition stressed that Moscow is exploiting the inaction of the world community to unilaterally impose its agenda for solution in Syria.

Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman al-Thani said that the Assad regime’s escalating onslaught on Idlib province risked undermining all chances of political solution in Syria, while France expressed its deep concern about the military escalation against Syrian cities and towns. Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people’s unity within the same Syrian soil
is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its
symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes
against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
