The Syrian Center for Journalistic Freedoms (SCJF) of the Association of Syrian Journalists said that the Assad regime is responsible for the gravest violations against journalists in November, including the killing of a journalist and wounding another one by direct shelling.
In a report issued on Tuesday, the Center said that media activist Abdul Hamid al-Yousif was killed in regime shelling that directly hit the town of Kfarouma in southern rural Idlib. It pointed out that media activist Ahmad al-Khatib was injured as a result of artillery shelling by regime forces on southern rural Idlib.
The Center documented eight violations against media workers in Syria in November. The Assad regime was responsible for two of the gravest violations, while HTS was responsible for three violations, and the PYD militia for three violations.
The Center pointed out that a total of 455 media workers have been killed in Syria since March 2011.
The Center recorded four cases of detention of media workers in Idlib and Aleppo provinces and two cases of physical assaults against media workers. It pointed out that five violations took place in Idlib, while three violations took place in Aleppo province.
The Center called for respecting the freedom of the press; ensuring the safety of media workers; and holding those responsible for violations accountable. It also called for respecting article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which stresses that “everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.” (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)
