Secretary of the political committee in the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Abdulbasit Abdullatif, has denounced the ongoing attacks conducted by forces loyal to the Assad regime against civilians in liberated areas. Abdullatif emphasized that the regime’s persistent pursuit of a military solution has resulted in the devastation of the nation, the senseless loss of innocent lives, and the displacement of Syrians in search of safety for themselves and their families.
In a press release, Abdullatif underscored that the regime’s actions, marked by violence and destruction, serve no military objectives but are driven solely by a desire for retribution and a deliberate obstruction of Syrians’ ability to live in peace and security, or to establish stable, self-governing communities free from tyranny.
Highlighting the plight of Syrian refugees facing hardships and mistreatment in some host nations, Abdullatif criticized the Assad regime for perpetuating threats against civilian lives and obstructing efforts to establish stable and secure living conditions, with access to essential services and employment opportunities.
Abdullatif reiterated that a political resolution remains the key to alleviating the suffering of Syrians and resolving the refugee crisis. He called for renewed efforts to revitalize the political process and implement relevant UN resolutions on Syria, including the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Resolutions 2118 and 2254.
The liberated areas have seen regime attacks on civilians by drones and guided missiles, resulting in injuries, including to children and women. The Syrian Civil Defense reported that five civilians, including two children and a woman from the same family, sustained injuries when their vehicle was targeted near the town of Daret Azza in Aleppo’s countryside. Additionally, suicide drones attacked two civilian vehicles and a local market in Daret Azza, though no casualties were reported.
Local activists have noted similar regime attacks in the countryside of Aleppo and Latakia, with no casualties reported, alongside artillery shelling in villages such as Al-Habata, Sheikh Suleiman, and Kafr Natin in Aleppo’s countryside.
