Secretary of the political committee in the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Abdelbaset Abdellatif, emphasized that the ongoing interception of drug shipments smuggled by the Assad regime at the borders of Arab countries serves as compelling evidence that any attempts at normalization with the regime were misguided, and persisting with such efforts will yield dire consequences.
Abdellatif highlighted that the primary objective of the drug trade was to extort regional countries, subsequently financing the regime’s violent machinery that has perpetrated crimes against the Syrian populace for over 12 years. He further noted the establishment of drug factories by the Assad regime across various Syrian provinces, warning of the impending inundation of the region with drugs, particularly Captagon pills.
Additionally, Abdellatif cautioned against succumbing to the political impasse imposed by the Assad regime and its allies, emphasizing that enduring the crisis regionally should not entail yielding to the regime’s blackmail, be it through the ongoing drug trade or the continued export of terrorism.
He reiterated that the ultimate solution to the Syrian crisis lies in advancing the political process and implementing UN resolutions, notably the Geneva Communique of 2012, along with Resolutions 2118 and 2254.
