Ayman Al-Asimi, a member of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), said that the security agencies of the Assad regime are responsible for the recent surge in kidnappings in Daraa province. He asserted that this tactic is being used to terrorize the region’s population and promote the regime’s false narrative of linking its return to stability.
Al-Asimi emphasized that the chaos in Daraa is being orchestrated by gangs affiliated with the regime’s security forces. These groups resort to kidnapping as a means of pressuring the local population and generating profits by extorting money from citizens.
Recently, an armed gang linked to the regime’s Military Security kidnapped a young woman in front of a restaurant in Daraa city and held her captive at an undisclosed location. The gang then contacted the girl’s family and demanded a ransom of $75,000 in exchange for her release.
The month of July has witnessed a significant rise in kidnappings by such gangs in Daraa province, adding to the growing chaos since the Assad regime regained control of the region in July 2018.
