Bahjat al-Atassi, a member of the political committee in the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), has criticized Russia’s repeated assertion that it targeted “terrorist groups” in northern Syria, calling it impudent. He contends that Russia’s actions, which primarily impact civilian homes and livelihoods, underscore its status as a rogue state disregarding international laws and norms.
Al-Atassi highlights the exposure of Russia’s arguments and tactics to the global community, particularly in the aftermath of documented mass massacres against innocent civilians in Syria and Ukraine.
He asserts that Russia consistently seeks justifications for its crimes against children and women while denying these actions. Al-Atassi emphasizes the diminishing credibility of Russia’s justifications, given the accurate documentation of these crimes by human rights organizations and activists.
Furthermore, Al-Atassi stressed that international inaction towards the crimes committed by the Assad regime and Russia, coupled with a failure to hold them accountable, has emboldened them to act with impudence and arrogance, perpetuating further crimes against civilians.
