Laith Al-Balous, son of the founder of the Men of Dignity Movement, Sheikh Wahid Al-Balous, stressed that the revolution of the people of Suwayda is not a revolution of the hungry, pointing out that since 2012, more than 3,000 people have volunteered with his father Sheikh Wahid Al-Balous, to join the revolution against Bashar Al-Assad. He stressed that the recent uprising in the province is a political revolution that begins with popular and economic demands and ends with political demands.
In an interview with Al-Quds Al-Arabi newspaper, Laith Al-Balous said that the Assad regime cannot meet any of the political or economic demands, and it has neither economic nor political solutions to offer. The regime will therefore respond to the uprising in Suwayda with iron and fire, he added.
“According to the reality on the ground, the future looks bleak. The situation in Suwayda is extremely dire because the regime does not have any economic or political solutions, as it wants to drag the province into an armed confrontation.”
Al-Balous went on: “The regime’s position is purely sectarian. The regime operates in a sectarian manner as it threatened us publicly and explicitly in response to the ongoing uprising in Suwayda.” He cited a regime official as saying “we have broken the hearts of 20 million Sunnis Muslim Syrians, and we are not powerless against you, O Druze.”
He pointed out that the Assad regime has nothing to offer but tanks and warplanes. He described the Suwayda’s governor’s threat to the locals during a meeting as reflecting the sectarian background of the regime and its cronies who do not respect religion, race, sect, or civil society.
Al-Balous praised the position of the Syrians supporting the ongoing protests in Suwayda, noting that the Syrian people are a free and unified people, and have dignity.
Al-Balous concluded his speech by saying: “We reject any insult to our dignity and any transgression of sanctities. Standing up to injustice is not new for the people of Suwayda, who are repeating the history of their ancestors and their glories. We stand heart and soul with the demands of the people from all sects and religions, and we will always defend our pride and dignity.”
