President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Salem Al-Meslet, praised the tremendous efforts of the Syrian Civil Defense since the first moments of the earthquake that struck Türkiye and Syria. The teams of the civil defense began search operations and extracted the victims from under the rubble of the buildings destroyed by the earthquake.
Al-Meslet said that the civil defense teams not only saved the lives of those trapped in the rubble but also began opening roads that were partially or completely closed by the rubble in several areas of northwestern Syria.
According to Al-Meslet, the Syrian Civil Defense, which is truly a source of pride for the Syrians in the liberated areas, should be supported with heavy machinery and equipment and adequate support, including fuel, to operate heavy vehicles that are necessary for rescue operations.
He also pointed to the rapid response of the civil defense, with all its staff working on the ground, to emergency events, as a state of emergency was declared in northwestern Syria from the first moments of the earthquake, and its teams began to respond directly.
The Syrian Civil Defense (also known as the White Helmets) is a voluntary organization operating in the liberated areas, established in 2013, and aims to provide relief to those affected by the bombing by the Assad regime forces and its allies. The organization also works in the fields of search and rescue, protection, and support for the resilience of communities.
