The Syrian Coalition said that the Assad regime had violated the “cessation of hostilities” agreement few hours after it took effect at Friday midnight. In the past few hours, regime forces bombed 15 rebel-held areas across Syria with heavy machine-guns, artillery and barrel bombs.
The Syrian Coalition called on the UN Security Council to respond to the Assad regime’s violations of the ceasefire agreement.
The regime violations of the truce agreement were recorded in Damascus, Rural Damascus, Dara’a, Aleppo, Homs, Hama and Latakia.
Activists confirmed that regime forces shelled the towns of Talbeesah in rural Homs, Al-Tuffahiya in rural Latakia, Darayya in Rural Damascus, Al-Lataminah in rural Hama, and Al-Yadodah in rural Dara’a. Regime forces also shelled the neighborhood of Bani Zeid in Aleppo. Activists also confirmed that Assad’s helicopters dropped six barrel bombs on the outskirts of the village of Al-Najiya west of Jisr al-Shughour in rural Idlib.
Secretary of the Syrian Coalition’s political committee Anas al-Abda said that rebel factions are still committed to the truce, stressing that rebel fighters were already engaging in defensive operations only.
Abda pointed out that these deliberate violations documented during the first few hours are designed to thwart the ceasefire agreement and consequently thwart any chances of launching a political process. He called upon sponsors of the agreement to enforce a ceasefire and compel the Assad regime to implement international resolutions. (Source: Syrian Coalition)
