Member of the Syrian Coalition Suheir Atassi condemned violations and crimes being committed by the Assad regime and its allies. She criticized the deep international silence over the regime’s violations of international law and international humanitarian law.
The Assad regime has escalated attacks on the Damascus suburbs of Qudsayya and Alhama in parallel with the brutal onslaught on the besieged neighborhoods of Aleppo. These escalating attacks, using internationally banned weapons against civilians, are clearly aimed at forcing the Syrian people to agree to so-called local truces and reconciliation deals whose terms are dictated by the Assad regime.
The Assad regime has kicked into the long grass the political process, which was endorsed by international resolutions, by persistently pursuing this policy, which is aimed at forcing civilians in key areas across Syria out of their homes and bringing about a demographic change.
Atassi stressed that the regime’s policies of mass forced displacement and demographic change are being pursued using internationally banned weapons as well as besiegement and starvation of civilians living in the areas besieged by regime forces.
The Syrian Coalition has repeatedly warned of the regime’s policy of the so-called local truces and evacuation deals, Atassi said, adding that Assad regime seeks to replace the UN-sponsored political process with these policies.
Atassi, who is also member of the opposition’s high negotiations committee, pointed out that the regime’s policies threaten the unity of Syria as they pave the way for the partition of Syria. (Source: Syrian Coalition)
