Deputy Chairman of the Australian diplomatic mission in Ankara, Proton Robertson, reaffirms his country’s support for the Syrian revolution and for the right of the Syrian people to regain their freedom, dignity and democracy, during a meeting with Secretary-General Mohammed Yahya Maktabi on Wednesday morning in Istanbul.
The two sides discussed the situation on the ground in northern and eastern Syria and also discussed the FSA equip and train program, which was launched after a US-Turkish agreement.
Maktabi stresses the importance of the support of the Friends of the Syrian people for the program, which will hopefully help create a nucleus of a national army whose main task will be protecting Syria’s borders and preserving the integrity of the Syrian territory and the unity of the Syrian people.
He also pointed to the importance of incorporating nearly 6,000 army officers who defected from the Assad regime during the establishment of the national army.
Maktabi noted that the Assad regime and ISIS are two sides of the same coin, stressing the need to fight both of them as the only to root out terrorism which has recently arrived in Europe. (Source: Syrian Coalition)
