Member of the Syrian National Coalition, Ahmed Shehadi, participated in an awareness-raising seminar on the importance of the wheat crop in the cultural center in the town of Al-Atareb in rural Aleppo. The seminar stressed the importance of wheat as a vital winter crop for people in the liberated areas.
The seminar, which was organized by Qinnisrin Development Association and Fox Aleppo website, was presented by Agricultural Engineer Majd Haj Omar, Director of the ICARDA Agricultural Coordination Group.
The seminar was dedicated to farmers in rural Aleppo and Idlib as well as agricultural technicians and engineers in the agricultural offices of the local councils and humanitarian organizations.
The seminar involved a discussion of the latest diseases and pests that affected the wheat crops in the liberated areas.
Organizers of the seminar provided guidance and awareness-raising tips to farmers in order to improve the grain yield and maintain the local wheat varieties.
The seminar included an overview of the stages of growing the wheat crop, including land preparation, selection of good varieties and cultivation as well the thin and broadleaf weed control operations and all other symptoms until harvesting.
Large swathes of agricultural land have been damaged in recent months as a result of bombardment and shelling by the Assad regime and its backers. Thousands of hectares of wheat crop were burned as a result. The attendees stressed the importance of taking care of the wheat crop and working for the best yield next year.
