The Coordinator of the Refugees and Displaced Persons Working Group in the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Ahmad Baccora, met with Maria Quinto, Coordinator of the humanitarian corridors and migrant services promoted by the Sant’Egidio Community, to discuss the conditions of Syrian refugees in Italy and explore avenues for cooperation to address their challenges.
Baccora expressed gratitude to Italian organizations for their role in receiving and supporting Syrian refugees, and engaged in discussions concerning the legal and social frameworks governing the lives of Syrian refugees in Italy.
Quinto spoke positively about Syrian refugees, noting their brief stays in reception centers before departing upon obtaining official documentation. She highlighted their rapid acquisition of the language, integration into Italian society, and endeavors to establish new lives for themselves.
Additionally, Quinto voiced genuine concerns about the future of refugees in Italy and Europe, citing the increasing influence of right-wing parties in elections, their parliamentary presence, and policy agendas rejecting refugees.
During his visit, Baccora also met with several Syrian refugees in Italy to hear firsthand about their challenges and living conditions. They explored avenues for collaboration to raise awareness about the Syrian crisis and the atrocities perpetrated against Syrians by the Assad regime and its allied sectarian militias.
