Ahmad Baccora, the Coordinator of the Refugees and Displaced Persons Working Group in the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), reiterated that Syria remains unsafe for the return of refugees, as reports of crimes committed by the Assad regime against returning refugees continue to emerge.
In a press statement, Baccora pointed to the death of 33-year-old Abdul Ghani Muneer under torture in Assad regime prisons in Aleppo, stressing that the regime has not ceased its crimes against the Syrian people. He added that attempts by some countries to label Syria as “safe” are political, not based on real or factual conditions.
Baccora emphasized that a political solution is the only way to address the root causes of the Syrian refugee crisis and all other problems in the country.
Local media recently reported on the death of Abdul Ghani Muneer under torture in Assad regime prisons after he was deported from Türkiye to the town of Azaz, and later to Aleppo.
Activists stated that Muneer lived in Azaz for five months but, unable to find work, decided to return to Aleppo city, which is under Assad regime control, after paying a military service exemption fee and completing a reconciliation process through his family. Upon his arrival, he was arrested by Assad’s forces, and his whereabouts remained unknown until his family received a call from military security to retrieve his body.
