Ahmad Baccora, Coordinator of the Refugees and Displaced Persons Working Group in the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), stated that Syrian detainees in Lebanon’s Roumieh Prison are enduring severe suffering due to discriminatory treatment and poor conditions.
In a press statement, Baccora highlighted that Syrian detainees are deprived of all forms of care, with medical negligence resulting in the death of a detainee on August 31. Earlier this week, detainees launched a hunger strike to protest the dire conditions.
Baccora urged the Lebanese judiciary to define the length of life sentences, stop delaying the issuance of rulings for detainees, and reduce the prison year to six months.
He also called on the Roumieh Prison administration to improve food and medical services, ensure a doctor is available at all times, and establish an emergency care system. Baccora further requested the expansion of prison facilities, as the prison’s capacity is 1,500 inmates, while the current population exceeds 3,700.
Baccora appealed to international humanitarian and human rights organizations to monitor the tragic conditions in Roumieh Prison and help provide humanitarian aid and medical care.
Syrian detainees in Roumieh Prison have initiated a hunger strike to protest the inhumane conditions, particularly the lack of healthcare, food shortages, and medicine. This neglect has already caused several deaths among inmates.
The prisoners are demanding a meeting with an envoy from the Lebanese Prime Minister’s Office to discuss their situation and relay their demands to Prime Minister Najib Mikati.
