Former president of the Syrian Coalition Hadi Albahra called on the European Union to enhance its role to resolve the Syrian conflict.
“The return of stability and political transition in Syria are in the interest of the EU. Therefore, the EU must play a more active role,” Albahra told reporters after a meeting with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini on Tuesday.
Albahra said the EU has an important role to pressure Russia and the Iranians to play a positive role to meet the aspirations of the Syrian people.
“The conflict is not for the sake of power but it is against the tyranny of the regime against human rights of the Syrian people,” Abahra added.
Albahra stressed that the Arab gulf countries have a very important role to play as their national and security interests are directly linked to the Syrian conflict. “The conflict will have an effect on the future of the region. Therefore, the gulf countries must have a central and active role to push forward the political solution,” he stressed.
A delegation of the Syrian Coalition on Wednesday concluded a visit to Brussels where they stressed the need for a more active role by the European Union to find a political solution in Syria through working on salvaging the political process and the “cessation of hostilities” agreement.
The delegation, which was led by President of the Syrian Coalition Anas Alabdah, met with a number of EU officials, including EU High Representative Federica Mogherini. Among the issues the delegation raised during the meeting were the political process, the Assad regime’s obstruction of humanitarian aid deliveries to besieged areas; the regime’s continued targeting of civilians and health facilities; and the regime’s refusal to release detainees.
