Secretary of the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) political committee, Abdul Majeed Barakat, delivered a speech during the announcement of the results of the youth parliament elections, which was held at the office of the Free Aleppo Provincial Council in the town of Azaz in rural Aleppo on Wednesday. The elections came as an answer to a proposal by the Stabilization Support Unit.
In attendance during the announcement were Head of the Syrian Interim Government, Abdurrahman Mustafa, Executive Director of the Assistance Coordination Unit, Muhammad Hasano, and representatives of provincial councils, local councils, civil society organizations, and revolutionary and civic entities.
Barakat congratulated, on the SOC’s behalf, the winners in the elections as he stressed the importance of this democratic move that can be built upon in the bodies, blocs and entities in the liberated areas.
He also stressed that it is an important experience in raising the political awareness of the Syrian youth, in preparation for injecting new blood into the institutions of the Syrian revolution and achieving parliamentary oversight over their work.
Barakat also said that the SOC attaches the utmost importance to the young generation as it has been fully convinced of the need to enhance their participation in the institutions of the revolution.
He pointed out that the SOC took several steps to promote the role of youth through the establishment of the Sports and Youth Commission. It will enable the young Syrian athletes to participate in international sports tournaments and strip the Assad regime of the right to represent Syria.
The founding committee of the Youth Parliament had held elections across northern Syria, with the participation of about 1,500 voters from volunteer and youth teams, in addition to independents, media people and people of determination, to elect 36 members out of 60 candidates.
The Youth Parliament aims to create a youth platform that represents the issues of Syrian youth of all affiliations and backgrounds, discuss the general societal issues and the major developments regarding the youth, and participate in political work.
